The Illinois Optometric Association, a statewide organization representing approximately 1000 Doctors of
Optometry, seeks an exceptional leader who is a strategic thinker, relationship-builder and a visionary change agent.  The executive director reports to and is responsible for executing policies of the IOA’s Board of Directors and is responsible for the organization’s achievement of its missions and goals, including the protection and promotion of the practice of Optometry.  The ED also is responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations, which includes the management of a $1M budget and a small office staff.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Membership recruitment, retention, and to coordinate volunteer involvement and leadership development;
  • Monitoring and assessing all legislative and regulatory developments that might impact the profession, including supervision of lobbyist(s) and lobbying activities;
  • Maintaining a close relationship with the American Optometric Association and its peer networks and developing working relationships with all related health care services, agencies, and policy makers;
  • Advocating, representing, and communicating the activities, programs, and goals of the association to our membership, state agencies, legislative bodies, related organizations, and the general public through multiple platforms and formats;
  • Overseeing and practicing sound financial principles, including developing and operating within budgetary guidelines, attending fundraising events, protecting and maintaining assets of the association, and building reserves for the future;
  • Supervising and implementing an annual convention and other yearly continuing educational events;
  • Educating all board members and overseeing meetings to ensure the association is in compliance with antitrust and other laws which directly affect not-for-profit organizations. 


  • Bachelor of Arts or Science degree required. Additional degrees a benefit. 
  • A minimum of three years of management experience in not-for-profit or public administration, government relations, health services, or related areas.  Management of a small business is a plus.
  • Legislative and regulatory experience, with emphasis on health policy and insurance issues preferred.
  • Availability for travel and required after-hours work, including weekends.
  • Talent and desire for public speaking at all conventions, education seminars and fund raising events.
